It’s a tough thing to try to diagnose: You discover some standing water on the floor that you have no idea where it came from. You do not remember spilling anything, nothing is dripping onto the floor from the ceiling, yet it seems to be pooling up. After minutes (or even hours) of searching, you see the source, a leaky pipe.

You discover some standing water on the floor that you have no idea where it came from. You do not remember spilling anything, nothing is dripping onto the floor from the ceiling, yet it seems to be pooling up.  After minutes (or even hours) of searching, you see the source, a leaky pipe.

Leaky pipes are something that we do not take seriously, but in actuality, it can become a big deal depending on where the water is found. Usually, you see things such as a leaky faucet in your kitchen or bathroom and ignore it, thinking nothing major could come from the small droplets of water that fall steadily into the sink. Even a tiny leak like that could cost you hundreds of dollars over the years if not taken care of immediately.

How Can You Fix A Leak?

Once you have located the source of the leak, there are many things that you can do. The absolute first thing you should do is cut off the water source to the place that is receiving water flow from, preventing leaks while working. You could attempt to fix the leak or contact a licensed plumber like Magic Rooter located in Tupelo, Mississippi, to repair the leak for you and prevent a more extensive problem from arising.

If you’re feeling adventurous, then you can try to use a couple of methods to fix the problem. Epoxy putty is a quick fix but not a permanent solution. Applying putty to the surface temporarily seals the leak long enough for you to either attempt to replace the pipe or contact a licensed professional.  Using a pipe repair kit is also an option to repair the leak but is still just a temporary fix for the main problem and, depending on the severity of the leak, may not even be useful. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when attempting to fix the leak, as fiberglass tape kits are a mixed bag when utilizing them.

Repair clamps are typically used when fixing larger cracks, splits, or ruptures in your pipes. However, it does require you to file down the edges of the crack/split/rupture so that it’s smoothed out before applying the patch to the pipe. As with the other options above, this is also a temporary solution, and in this case, a ruptured pipe, if not resolved immediately, can lead to larger problems soon.
